Services for Hiram E. Shorey, 82, a Loop tailor for half a century and one of the founders, in 1905, of the Rotary Club, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the chapel at 3604 Ogden av. Mr. Shorey died Wednesday night in his home at 1906 S. Spaulding av.

 

He and three other men founded the Rotary Club in a restaurant [this is an error on the part of the Chicago Daily news, follow this link to Harris' description of the actual event] on Dearborn St. Surviving are his widow, Gertrude, a son and a daughter.

HOLD SERVICES TOMORROW FOR ROTARY FOUNDER

 

Services for Hiram E. Shorey, 82, one of the four Chicago men who founded the Rotary club, will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in the chapel at 3604 Ogden av. He died Wednesday night in his home, 1906 S. Spaulding av.

 

Mr. Shorey who was a merchant tailor from Litchfield, Me., met with the three other men for the first Rotary luncheon Feb. 23, 1905, in a restaurant on Dearborn st. The others were Paul P. Harris, an attorney, 10856 Longwood dr.; Sylvester Schlele, [Schiele] a coal merchant, 2028 W. 110th st., and A. G. Loehr, a mining engineer, who died several years ago. Their first civic work was the purchase of a horse for a doctor.  [This is not accurate according to Paul Harris, follow the link for the official record]

 

Mr. Shorey was a tailor in the loop for 50 years. He is survived by his widow, Gertrude; a daughter, Marian of Chicago, and a son, Edward, of Buffalo, N. Y.    Basil Lewis
